The original Moab shoes are a much-loved design with Merrell building its brand upon their success.
Now here is the third iteration of them – the Moab 3 GTX – and I’ve been wearing them over plenty of miles on Scottish Munros this summer.
Merrell Moab 3 GTX review
These give you instant comfort right from the get-go. In the summer months, when some trails are drier, and you don’t want your feet overheating in ankle boots, a hiker/trainer is ideal.
What’s so good about the Moab 3 GTX is that they have the rugged build of a normal hiking boot, but in a trainer/low-top design.
The upper is made out of a combination of pig suede and recycled mesh areas. And throughout is a waterproof Gore-Tex membrane. The laces are recycled too.
Underfoot there’s plush cushioning along with a chunky Vibram outsole with 5mm lugs. An air cushion in the heel gives the Moab 3’s a bouncy feel too. As I’ve said before in previous reviews, I find my feet tire super fast these days and can ache after a long day (around 25km to 30km) so I’ve really appreciated the comfort in these.
So far the Gore-tex lining has worked brilliantly to stop any water getting in when going through Scottish bogs, wet grass or trickling mountains streams. The bellows tongue helps to keep any debris getting in too.
I particularly like the amount of protection in these; there’s an all-round bumper and a large toecap that really does absorb those knocks from rocks when you’re tired and misplacing your feet after a long day.
