MUSTO is continually coming up with clothing that can be worn for multiple types of adventure sports, not just sailing.
The idea being that if the clothing is ‘ocean engineered’ then it can pretty much cope with every other type of weather.
The company was founded in 1964 by the British Olympic sailing medalist Keith Musto OBE, so now that it’s 2014, there’s 50 years of heritage and innovation going into the brand’s clothing.
This is why the MUSTO ‘Evolution’ collection of clothing is so special. The Evolution collection has just been extended this AW14 with the Sail-Lite Jacket, the Performance Coat and the Arctic Pro Parka.
The Sail-Lite jacket is ideal for runners or hillwalkers that want to quickly waterproof up over a fleece or base layer.
It’s made of 2-layer GORE-TEX with Paclite. It also has a water repellent YKK Vision Aquaguard zip with a zip guard, as well as a single chest pocket and two lower pockets with splashproof zips.
MUSTO’s sailing DNA is also present in the Evolution Sail-Lite Jacket as it has a fold-away hood with a two–way adjustment, a scooped back hem with shock cord adjustment which traps air in and a brushed tricot inner collar for comfort around the neck.
The Evolution Performance Coat (see left, £350) has two layers of waterproof and breathable rip stop nylon treated with a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) finish. It’s warm too thanks to being filled with Primaloft Gold insulation that mimics the softness and packability of down. Best of all, it has Lycra cuffs, treated with a DWR finish, that traps air inside the jacket (keeping you warm) and because they’re stretchy, they don’t allow any gaps for drafts or water to ride up the sleeves – a truly genius piece of design. The cuffs have comfortable thumb loops to help to stop snow, wind and rain from getting up there too. The coat has two deep chest pockets so that we don’t need to carry a backpack when we go skiing (you carry your kit in the pockets instead) and there’s even a specially shaped pocket on the left-hand sleeve for a lift pass. It has hand warmer pockets which are fleece-lined, internal zipped pockets, and a headphone exit point with shockcord loop for music players. Mens in comes in either Black, Poseidon Blue or True Red. The ladies has a very flattering cut and comes in Bordeaux, Poseidon Blue and True Red.
Finally, MUSTO’s Arctic Pro Parka (£850) is the world’s first fully taped, waterproof parka. It’s made of 2-layer GORE-TEX with a DWR finish. For warmth it’s filled with the brand new Primaloft® Gold Insulation Down Blend; the world’s first combination of water-repellent goose down and ultra-fine hydrophobic fibres. This absorbs nine times less water and dries four times faster than untreated down. The Arctic Pro Parka also has photoluminescent reflectors that charge up throughout the day by absorbing light and then radiate it out during the night. To top it all off it has real Coyote fur trim around the hood, which pops off easily for washing, articulated sleeves, a protective collar with fluorescent trim, a 3-way adjustable wadded hood, a double storm flap over the 2-way YKK zip and handwarmer pockets located at chest height.
