Hotel Siglo is a newly-built retreat offering luxury in the historic fishing town of Siglufjörður on Iceland’s Troll Peninsular.
It sits sits directly on the marina and is surrounded by towering mountains and colourful wooden buildings.
The hotel is striking; built in the traditional Icelandic style with green clapboard cladding and white windows, with sweeping views over Mount Holshyrna and the harbour.
There’s a range of room types, each combining classic Nordic design with contemporary features; dark wooden floors, velvet curtains, comfortable window seats and Farrow and Ball colours.
Hotel Siglo is just an hour’s scenic drive from Iceland’s second largest city Akureyri, so it’s the perfect base to explore the north of Iceland.
The hotel has the ‘Sunna’ restaurant and bar and there are two unique neighbouring restaurants Kaffi Rauðka and Hannes Boy (where all chairs and tables are made from Mexican tequila barrels).
Chefs can often be seen picking up fresh fish at the harbour just outside. Signature dishes include salted cod, Icelandic hashed fish and BBQ baby back ribs.
The hotel has its own outdoor geothermal spa and sauna, though guests can also opt to visit the larger indoor pool in the town centre. Additionally, a more family friendly outdoor pool with large slides is located in the neighbouring town of Ólafsfjörður, a short 15 minute drive away.
The hotel also has its own fishing boat, Steini Vigg, named after a famous local fisherman, on which fishing trips can be arranged. The restaurant then offers to cook the catch for the guest’s dinner. Other activities available include the engaging Herring Era Museum (full of fishing memorabilia including two large vintage fishing boats with awards including the European Museum Award) and a variety of hiking trails that lead straight from the hotel up into the mountains and valleys surrounding Siglufjörður and Ólafsfjörður, perfect for all levels of experience.
Guests should keep eyes peeled for a trail that leads to a beautiful forest that stands deep in the fjord between two towering mountains, within which hides the Leyningsfoss waterfall, translated as “the hidden waterfall”.
Stays at the hotel are available as part of Discover the World’s new North Iceland Retreat holiday, priced from just £490pp based on 2 sharing on a B&B basis for 3 nights including return domestic flights between Reykjavik and Akureyri, airport transfers and hire car.
