January is the prime month for TV adverts for holidays.
It’s a simple trick because the advert makers know those images of blue skies and warm beaches are enough to tempt us into booking an escape from the misery of the grey skies outside.
So it’s with an apology that I make this latest post but if I’m going to even think about booking a holiday anywhere, then Chile has just hit the top of my list thanks to the sight of this, the world’s largest swimming pool.
Long enough for us to earn our 1 km distance certificate, this bad boy has a volume of 250,000 cubic metres of water and at it’s deepest point is a staggering 35 metres to the bottom. That’s a long way to swim down to retrieve our swimming goggles.
The pool is San Alfonso del Mar and is acknowledged by Guinness World Records as being the world’s largest swimming pool. The next biggest is the Orthlieb pool in Casablanca, Morocco, which is 150 by 100 metres.
And the person behind it? Crystal Lagoons founder and Chileaan businessman Fernando Fischmann (no smirking at the fish-related surname).
Yeah I know, it seems crazy to me as well to build such a big pool when the sea’s right next door but rip tides are particularly strong on Chile’s coastline which makes swimming conditions dangerous.
If this seems too touristy, then you could always stop one night here then explore the rest of Chile – an adventurists paradise.
